Navigating Climate Crossroads

The world is at a climate crossroads.

More than 130 countries have committed to net zero, but the biggest challenges to global decarbonisation remain ahead. We need a dynamic, yet concerted approach to scale impact, leveraging the strengths of technology and nature-based solutions. Notwithstanding recent debates, the voluntary carbon market remains critical and necessary to unlock private and public capital to close the world’s USD 4.1 trillion financing gap by 2050.

Themed ‘Navigating Climate Crossroads’, the inaugural GenZero Climate Summit will focus on how we can live up to our net-zero commitments and discuss the potential of diverse pathways to overcome challenges and accelerate decarbonisation globally.

Date: 7 – 8 June 2023
Time: 2.00pm – 6.00pm (GMT +8)
Venue: Sands Expo and Convention Centre, Level 5, Ballroom D, Singapore

The GenZero Climate Summit is a by-invitation only event.

The Road to COP28: Potential for Meaningful Progress

IPCC in its Sixth Assessment Report has warned us we are headed into dangerous territory if we do not act urgently in the next seven years. The inaugural Global Stocktake at COP28 this year will assess global progress towards the 1.5°C target, identify the gaps, and explore how countries and non-state actors can work collectively on solutions. Yet, negotiations will take place against a backdrop of deep geopolitical undercurrents and economic headwinds.

This panel will unpack the realities ahead, mine perspectives on how policymakers and businesses can navigate geopolitical complexities, and rally around solutions to bend the emissions curve. What will a successful COP28 look like, and what proverbial carrots and sticks are needed now and beyond?

Investing in our Net Zero Future

Realising a net zero world by mid-century is a multi-trillion dollar opportunity. Although climate solutions continue to make significant breakthroughs in tandem with growing capital support, the transition into a net zero future continues to be hampered by slow progress at an industry level – why is this so and how can we shift the investment perspective among corporates and SMEs?

This panel will delve into investor concerns around climate risks, decarbonisation opportunities and emerging climate tech solutions, whilst also providing different geographical perspectives and contrasts in market challenges for corporates and SMEs in the USA, Europe and Asia.

Navigating Climate Impact for Investors

In 2021, US$60b of private capital were channelled towards decarbonisation solutions globally. But with all the enthusiam and capital flows, are investments actually helping reduce emissions? Or are investors pouring capital into the dark? While some investors have started measuring and quantifying climate impact from their investments, there is a lack of standardisation on measurement approaches. Limited data also hinders meaningful insights, comparability and decision making. What can investors do?

Find out more in this interactive session on how investors can navigate these challenges.

Negative Emissions Technologies: Will Carbon Removals Displace Carbon Avoidance?

It is becoming increasingly clear that negative emission technologies (NET) will be an important lever for decarbonisation. In recent years, a diaspora of carbon removal methods has emerged – from storing carbon in minerals to ocean-based carbon capture. Despite significant advancements in the science behind NETs, most of these innovations are still at an early stage. Hence, they face large hurdles to being able to deliver climate impact at speed and scale. Will carbon removals displace carbon avoidance solutions (e.g. renewables, energy efficiency) that are prevalent today?

Join our panellists in the discussion on the current state of NETs, economic and policy levers that could unlock supply, and the opportunities for policymakers, corporates, and investors alike.

The Case for Nature-Based Solutions

Nature-based solutions offer a promising path towards meeting the Paris Agreement target of limiting global warming to 1.5°C by 2030, providing almost a third of the necessary emissions reductions. With abundant opportunities to accelerate mitigation, ranging from optimising unused land to increasing biodiversity, these solutions offer multiple benefits for both the environment and local communities. However, despite growing interest from public and private sectors, challenges to scalability persist.

This panel discussion will explore the opportunities and obstacles around nature-based solutions as we plant seeds of hope for a net-zero future.

Where Does the Future of Carbon Markets Lie?

The voluntary carbon markets quadrupled in value to reach US$2b in 2021, but the market has come under recent critcism and skepticism on the integrity of carbon credits. Where then, does the future of carbon markets lie? How can technology, market infrastructure, science, verification and measurement standards evolve in response to these challenges? Do technology enablers make a real difference to help improve transparency and confidence in the market?

Join our panelists as they discuss the destiny of carbon markets and what is required for it to succeed.

In What We Trust: Tech or Nature

As the issue of climate change becomes increasingly critical, the need for diversified pathways to create positive climate impact has never been more important. From decreasing deforestation and supporting mangrove reforestation strategies, to carbon capture and storage (CCS) solutions and voluntary carbon markets — what are some strategies that can be deployed to harmonise these pathways for climate action?

Hear from industry leaders as they discuss the case for carbon management technologies, nature-based solutions, and the carbon markets while considering business and economic considerations related to cost, scalability and governance.

Article 6: From Concept to Reality

We got Article 6 in Paris, followed by 6 years of logjam in the negotiations, before countries agreed on a set of good rules on carbon markets in Glasgow. Article 6 marks a paradigm shift on how international carbon markets will operate post-Kyoto. It will not be easy, but countries are moving from pilots to implementation at scale. Corresponding adjustments, SOP, and OMGE – what do these terms mean, and how effective will the new international compliance market be in addressing climate change? What are the implications on the voluntary carbon market?

This panel will unpack the joys of bringing Article 6 from concept to reality, spotlight early movers in the space, and suggest how policymakers and businesses can navigate the complexity of Carbon Markets 2.0.
