The past, present and future of carbon markets

Carbon markets are at an inflection point whereby demands for greater trust and integrity are driving global collaboration at scale.

Since the Kyoto Protocol in 1997 where public debate focused on how to develop a single global market for trading carbon permits, how has the voluntary and compliance carbon markets evolved since? Would a convergence of both carbon markets be likely and what is the possibility of achieve harmonised global standards? What would carbon markets 2.0 look like?

Saving Mother Nature: Opportunities and limitations of nature-based solutions

Natural ecosystems can provide a massive 30% of mitigation needed by 2030 to keep global warming below 2°C. Yet, nature-based solutions have come under global scrutiny with ongoing disputes about their real impact on climate, biodiversity and communities. As the divide between the Global South and Global North widens, how can nature-based solutions step up to solve the trilemma of inequality, nature and climate change? How can policies and standards help to enhance trust and scale impact globally? How should businesses look at nature investments to fulfill their climate objectives and claims?

The opening panel will bring together global climate leaders to discuss the opportunities and limitations of nature-based solutions, and ways to unlock greater Global North-South collaboration to scale impact.

The Power of Technology: Leveraging technology to accelerate nature-based solutions

Integrating technology with nature-based solutions can significantly accelerate an uptake in legitimacy and promulgation of such solutions. How do we leverage technology to improve Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) and democratise access to verified real-time climate data globally? How do we leverage technology to scale and enhance the impact of nature-based solutions in emerging markets where most of the world’s carbon sinks are located? How can carbon financing and carbon markets help catalyse the scale up of tech to enhance nature-based solutions? Find out more from global leaders across the nature-based solutions ecosystem on this panel.

Enabling private investment for nature-based solutions: From ideas to action

Nature-based solutions involve the protection and sustainable management of terrestrial, marine, and freshwater ecosystems, offering cost-effective climate action by addressing the twin crises of nature loss and climate change simultaneously. However, nature-based solutions currently receives less than 3% of total climate finance, reflecting critical underfunding in this area. What are the levers to unlock private investments into nature-based solutions, and what are the types of capital needed? How can policymakers, investors, academia and project developers work in unison to create an enabling environment to de-risk nature-based solutions projects and catalyse funding to scale impact?

Carbon Markets 2.0: What does the future hold?

The road to harmonised rules might be a long one but it is imperative that the voluntary carbon market continues this process of improvement and collaboration as collective action can go a long way in building greater confidence in the consistency of quality and standards. This panel aims to bring together global crediting programmes to discuss their theory of change for Carbon Markets 2.0, and their plans for a rapidly evolving space that could be at its inflection point.

Carbon Markets 2.0: Converging compliance and voluntary carbon markets

The key objective of compliance and voluntary carbon markets is to help set an aligned path to net-zero emissions in line with the Paris Agreement and be an effective financing mechanism. But with Article 6 in play, how does the landscape change? Are carbon credits with corresponding adjustments needed in voluntary carbon markets? What is the role of Implementation Agreements between countries and has there been meaningful progress since COP27? This panel aims to draw insights from governments, investors, and project developers on whether the theory of Article 6 can become reality.

Catalysing sustainable solutions for greenfield and brownfield built environment

The built environment contributes to nearly 40% of global energy-related carbon emissions and is set to grow. Rapid population growth and rising purchasing power of emerging economies are predicted to drive global floor area growth by 2050. While sustainable solutions can be more easily implemented on greenfield developments; it is equally critical to focus on the sustainable transformation of brownfield developments given the tremendous number of existing buildings in developed economies.

Singapore has committed to halve emissions from its peak by 2050, with a view to achieving net zero emissions as soon as viable in the second half of the century. The fireside chat with Frederick Teo, CEO of GenZero, will share innovative solutions and case studies to support both greenfield and brownfield transformations.

Banking on the Ocean: Southeast Asia's Role in Pioneering Blue Decarbonisation

Ocean-based climate solutions could deliver up to a fifth of Nationally Determined Contributions, but they seldom feature in national climate pledges. Southeast Asia, with its long coastlines and a territorial sea space three times larger than its landmass, could offer opportunities for the development of ocean-based mitigation solutions with significant ecosystem co-benefits. Research seeking to identify and scale ocean-based decarbonisation activities, alongside the development of robust Measurement, Reporting, and Verification (MRV) methods, is currently ongoing.

What can be learned from current research and pilots that could catalyse ocean-based climate mitigation projects, and spur investor confidence to unlock the ocean as a key pathway to net zero?
