Catalysing Finance for Climate Solutions: How can Carbon Markets Help

Carbon markets channel catalytic capital towards impactful solutions for climate action, thereby helping to plug the climate finance gap. However, they are facing multiple headwinds from demand and supply side.

This panel will bring together speakers across the carbon value chain to discuss the strategies required to scale up finance through carbon markets.

Article 6 in Focus: How do we move forward?

The breakdown of negotiations at COP28 over Article 6 guidance left many eager to see progress. While COP28 yielded no definitive outcome, progress on bilateral agreements signalled continued optimism.

This year, can COP29 reverse the tide? Where did COP28 leave us, and has there been progress on Article 6 since then? How can Article 6 co-exist with or even strengthen, the voluntary carbon market?

Governance and Guardrails: The future of regulatory oversight for carbon markets

The path to harmonised carbon market regulations may be long, but robust oversight remains essential for the continued enhancement and effectiveness of the voluntary carbon market.

However, what constitutes good regulatory oversight? How should leaders and regulators strike a balance between too much regulation to stifle growth and too little to incentivise action?

What High-quality and High-integrity Nature-based Solutions for Climate Mitigation look like

There remains an urgent need to scale up financing for nature protection and restoration. Despite demand in carbon markets for nature-based activities, financing for carbon outcomes alone is not sufficient in addressing the drivers of nature loss, protecting at-risk ecosystems or driving transformative and sustainable change. This Panel discusses how a break away from the siloed approach of NBS financing can scale up the effectiveness of carbon finance to NbS, balancing and managing synergies for the climate, biodiversity and people.

Corporate Responsibility and the Role of Carbon Markets

Corporate climate action is a critical part of global climate action. At the same time, in the fast-growing climate space, guidance on corporate climate responsibility, including on the role of carbon markets, is being continually refined. This panel explores current opportunities and challenges for companies seeking to implement climate action in a credible and science-based way, and to clarify guidance on the role of carbon finance within this.
