David Heng is an Investment Committee Member at GenZero. He is also currently the Chief Executive Officer of Temasek Trust Asset Management and Founder & Chief Executive Officer of ABC Impact. He has over 25 years of experience in the investment industry, leading investments across multiple themes, geographies, and asset classes.
Prior to leading Temasek Trust Asset Management, David held senior positions in Singapore global investment company Temasek. His appointments included Joint Head of Consumer, Head of Real Estate, Joint Head of China, and Head of Japan & Korea.
During his 14-year tenure with Temasek, David stewarded the growth of financial services, consumer, and real estate portfolios where he made significant contributions in both value accretion and talent development. With an established track record of leading and structuring complex investment and divestment transactions, David was involved from the very beginning in Temasek’s evolution from a holding company to a direct investor actively seeking long-term returns.
In the financial services sector, David spearheaded pioneering investments into Chinese banks for Temasek. In 2005, he led a groundbreaking US$1b investment in China Construction Bank at its IPO with follow-on investments bringing the value to nearly US$3b, which eventually generated a 5X multiple on invested capital (MOIC); a US$108m investment in Ming Sheng Bank with 7X MOIC; and a US$500m investment in Siam Commercial Bank with 2X MOIC. He also led Temasek’s investment into Alliance Bank and successfully divested a significant stake in Bank International Indonesia.
David was subsequently handed the responsibility of building up the Temasek consumer portfolio in late 2007. He built up an investment team with consumer sector expertise and together they grew the sector portfolio value to SG$17b. Notable investments include the landmark US$5.7b acquisition of a stake in A.S. Watson and the US$4.3b acquisition of Olam International in 2014. He also led an investment into luxury goods maker Delvaux in 2011 and the divestment of a significant stake in Fraser & Neaves in 2010.
In 2010, David was given the additional responsibility of overseeing the real estate cluster at Temasek. He steered the team into new geographies and asset classes, including venturing into distressed US real estate opportunities. David initiated and formulated the real estate hard asset strategy for Temasek and drove the expansion into the London real estate market. Under his watch, the real estate portfolio value nearly doubled from SG$13b to SG$24b.
David is a Board Director of NSYE-listed SEA Limited (NYSE:SE), Seatown Holdings, and Temasek Trust Asset Management, among other appointments. He sits on the investment committees of ABC Impact and decarbonisation investment platform GenZero. David is also a member of the Steering Committee of the Sustainable Finance Development Network. Other boards that David serves on include the Centre for Impact Investing and Practices, and the Singapore Art Museum.
A firm believer that impact investing exemplifies how private capital can be a force for good, David founded ABC Impact in 2019 after leaving Temasek. The private equity fund invests in impact-driven companies with the aim of generating positive and measurable social or environmental outcomes in Asia, alongside a compelling risk-adjusted return for its investors. With the support of founding investors Temasek Trust, Temasek, Pavilion Capital, Mapletree, Seatown Holdings, SP Group, and Sembcorp, ABC Impact today nurtures a portfolio that is catalysing positive change at scale in Asia.
David is concurrently Chief Executive Officer of Temasek Trust Asset Management, the Singapore-based global asset management company investing in positive outcomes for economies, societies, and the environment. Established in 2019 by Temasek Trust, a steward of philanthropic endowments and gifts, Temasek Trust Asset Management has two core investment units – ABC Impact and Temasek Trust Capital. Temasek Trust Capital generates sustainable returns to power philanthropic outcomes.
Prior to Temasek, David was with Deutsche Bank AG as its Vice President (Telecom, Media & Technology) of Investment Banking from 2000 to 2003 and was Vice President of Merger & Acquisition Advisory for Hong Kong and Singapore from 1998 to 2000. Before Deutsche Bank AG, David worked in Standard Chartered Merchant Bank.
David holds a Master of Business Administration degree from the University of Hull (United Kingdom) and a Bachelor of Engineering degree from the University of Canterbury (New Zealand).
